Communications Coordinator

The Hands-Off Mother Earth! (HOME) Alliance is seeking an enthusiastic and dynamic Communications Coordinator who is passionate about working in a global alliance dedicated to advocating against geoengineering. The HOME Alliance is the driving force behind an emerging movement that is fighting the growing threat of the large-scale technological manipulation of the climate and biodiversity. It is an international civil society network with allies in the Global South and North.

As HOME Alliance Communications Coordinator you will be responsible for developing HOME’s communication strategies and strengthening its presence and outward-facing identity in both the mainstream and social media. You will work closely with HOME’s Core Team and Steering Committee to ensure that its communications outputs reach different audiences, from civil society to policy-makers, and that they accurately reflect and amplifiy HOME’s advocacy work.

Role: Part-time Communications Coordinator, 20 hours per week.

Location: The candidate can be based anywhere in the world, though the Global South is preferable. Access to a fast and reliable internet connection is required.

Contract period: As soon as possible until 31 December 2024, with the possibility of an extension. 

The main responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and implementing HOME’s communication strategies, directed towards both the mainstream and social media.
  • Assessing the effectiveness of HOME communications work, identifying strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for improvement. 
  • Developing and maintaining working relationships with journalists and other key stakeholders such as HOME’s allies. 
  • Developing and strengthening HOME’s visual and media identity. 
  • Monitoring, updating and creating content for HOME’s website and social media platforms.
  • Closely collaborating with the communications teams of the alliances and networks that HOME is involved in.
  • Seeking opportunities for and organising communications related events (e.g. press conferences) in relevant fora. 

The successful candidate should:

  • Have communications experience, particularly with developing, monitoring and implementing communications strategies.
  • Be committed to advocating for climate justice and have some experience of organising within social movements and civil society alliances.
  • Have experience of and/or a background in mainstream media and/or journalism.
  • Be able to understand complex geoengineering and policy-related issues and transform them into accessible communications materials.  
  • Be comfortable working remotely and as part of an international team, covering different time zones.
  • Be self-motivated with excellent coordination and organisational skills.
  • Have excellent communications skills in English, both written and verbal. Knowledge of Spanish and/or French is an advantage.
  • Be able to travel internationally (approx. 1-2 times a year), for regional or international events.
  • (Desirable) Have a general understanding of international fora and climate negotiations.

Marine Geoengineering Working Group Coordinator

The Hands Off Mother Earth! (HOME) Alliance is seeking an enthusiastic Marine Geoengineering Working Group Coordinator who is eager to work in a global alliance dedicated to advocating against geoengineering. The HOME Alliance is the driving force behind an the emerging movement that is fighting the growing threat of the large-scale technological manipulation of the climate and biodiversity. It is an international civil society network with allies in the Global South and North.

As the Marine Geoengineering Working Group Coordinator, you will help to achieve the strategic goals of HOME’s Marine Geoengineering Working Group, through developing an in-depth critique of marine geoengineering, undertaking capacity building activities for HOME members, and participating in policy-related discussions and processes. You will also contribute to strengthening the HOME Alliance overall, and to delivering its strategic goals through the efforts of the Marine Working Group. You will be supported by and closely collaborate with the HOME Coordinator and Core Team in order to carry out the role.

Role: Part-time Marine Geoengineering Working Group Coordinator, 16 hours per week.

Location: The candidate can be based anywhere in the world, though the Global South is preferable. Access to a fast and reliable internet connection is required.

The main responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and implementing an organisational and advocacy strategy for the Marine Geoengineering Working Group.
  • Collaborating with other HOME Working Groups, the Core Team and the Steering Committee.
  • Coordinating the production of communications materials and other publications on marine geoengineering.
  • Coordinating an in-person Working Group meeting and occasional (virtual) capacity-building and knowledge-sharing sessions.
  • Facilitating the participation of HOME Alliance members in the Working Group, and organising monthly online planning meetings.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have experience of coordinating a small team and/or project management.
  • Be committed to advocating for climate justice and have some experience of working within social movements and civil society alliances.
  • Have an understanding and ideally experience of organisational development and strategy implementation in civil society alliances.
  • Have good background knowledge of policies and governance relating to oceans, biodiversity, and climate change.
  • Be comfortable working remotely and as part of an international team, covering different time zones.
  • Be self-motivated, able to independently manage your workload, and have good time management skills.
  • Be able to travel internationally (approx. 1-2 times a year) for regional or international events.
  • Be fluent in English; knowledge of French and/or Spanish is an advantage.
  • (Desirable) Have a general understanding of international fora concerning the oceans and climate change.
  • (Desirable) Have budget management and fundraising skills.
